County International Selection Day

On Sunday 28th of September, Guides and Senior Section members from

West Yorkshire West went to Bradley Woods Huddersfield for a selection day for the NEE International Weekend.

The day started with crafts and some snacks and juice to eat and drink.

After making either little bears, shooting stars, caterpillars or bed rolls out of pipe cleaners, (We did this with instructions, I don’t think we could do it again!), we had a go at playing the new county ocarinas. Ocarinas are played like a flute or recorder, but are probably a lot easier to play than a flute! We practised a few songs, including: London’s Burning, Frere Jacques and Daisy Daisy and then we played them all together, we were an amazing orchestra!

When we had finished playing world class ocarinas, we had a drink and a biscuit and got separated into two teams. We then went out onto the low ropes (assault course). The first time around the low ropes course we just went around to get used to it and to get to know our teams. The next time around the course we had to take a basketball around with us, without dropping it! As you can imagine, it wasn’t very easy! The third time around the course we had to take the basketball around without dropping it and every person in our team had to hold the ball on every obstacle. This helped us build a bond between our team and we got to get to know different people and make new friends.

Dinner time! After nursing our rope burns from the low ropes course we got to eat lots of different foods. Yum! We tasted food from all different parts of the world. There were: Cheeses, Different Breads, Meats, Salads, Olives, Muffins, Fruit, Flapjacks, Everything!! Most girls tried something new, and after trying it loved it!

Now, it's time for getting wet. When I say wet, I really do mean it! Anneliese, who was one of the girls there, said ‘Did you really need to squirt us with water while we were blindfolded?’ Now, who would do such a thing to poor innocent girls? The leaders of course!! You’ve never seen anything as funny in your life, as the County Commissioner running around with a water pistol squirting you as many times as she can! I honestly don’t know how many buckets of water they used in one day!

You see, we took part in a wide game where we had to make passports, build a bivouac, complete a string trail blindfolded and boil an egg on an open fire to help protect us and our provisions, all whilst we were under attack!

'The whole day was fun for everyone and I enjoyed every minute of it.'
