Celebrating Girlguiding Centenary
Girlguiding UK is currently celebrating its Centenary and our girls, young women and Leaders are having an amazing time completing adventurous activities, attending parties and proms, helping our community and generally having a fantastic time but most of all fun and we hope each and every girl will have her “Mountain top experience”
Opportunities have always been key in Girlguiding as in l909 some girls attended unannounced at a rally held for boy scouts at Crystal Palace, in London. The girls wanted the Chief Scout, Robert Baden-Powell to start something for the girls and later when asked “Who started the Guides?” he replied “They started themselves”.
Girl Guides in every generation face new and exciting ways of proving themselves. The goals they achieve have changed over the years, but no matter how times change one thing remains constant – a Guide always rises to the challenge.
Whilst girls are having fun they are learning to work as part of a team, gaining confidence to try new things and become more caring.
When a girl becomes a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide they join a very large family. Today over 550,000 girls and women belong to Girlguiding UK. Across the world, there are over l0 million people involved in Guiding – that’s a lot of people but just imagine how many have been involved over l00 years.
After a year of amazing Centenary moments, all Girlguiding UK members will join together at 20:10 20/10 2010 to remember the first incredible l00 years of Guiding and to start the next l00 years.
We look forward to seeing you there.
