Book Aid International – Ubuntu – ‘I Am Because You Are’
After much discussion & debate we picked Book Aid International
as our Changing the World Project,
as reading is a popular past time among our girls (surprise surprise!).
As part of her Baden Powell Challenge, Ellie took the lead on the project.
She took the information pack home and picked out the activities we would do each week. She then introduced them and explained them to the other girls.
We were introduced to four African countries – Kenya, Uganda, Eritrea
and Malawi - and learned about how life is lived there.
This included some history, some facts and figures about earnings
and how many children went to school!
We carried out 5 activities from the activity pack learning about African life as we did:
Friendship Bracelets: crafts are a popular way throughout Africa to earn money to live
Exotic Fruit Salad: there are different kinds of wonderful fruits available in many African countries including those we were visiting
Story Telling: Ellie brought a book to Guides and we took it in turns to read from it. We then discussed the story and also other books we have read and liked or disliked
Book Sale: As our contribution to fundraising for Book Aid International we have held a number of book sales at various fairs
Where Is Africa?: As an extra activity we had an evening of discussion comparing our lives to those in Africa and learning about how books will make a difference to many lives
We donated £90 to Book Aid International.

Who we are. We help bring free books to people living in some of the poorest places in the world. We need your help … because everyone, everywhere, has the right to improve their lives by learning how to read & educate themselves. So help us … send more books. |
Ubuntu - is an ancient African term which describes a way of seeing the world and behaving. A person with ubuntu knows that helping other people and caring for the world will make it a better place for us all.
