Who are we?
The Senior Section is the section of Girlguiding UK for young women aged between 14 and 25 years and is the most flexible section of Girlguiding UK.
Unlike other sections of Girlguiding UK there are lots of ways to be a member of this section. The different roles you can get involved in are:-
- Ranger
- Young Leader
- Young adult Leader
- Lone Senior Section member
- In4mer
- Member of SSAGO
- Young Commissioner/Adviser
- Member of the Trefoil Guild
These pages on the Girlguiding UK website explain the above in detail.
It is possible that a member may belong to more than one category eg. she could be a Ranger and at the same time be a Young Leader with a Rainbow unit.
What do we do?
Look Wider
Look Wider is a personal development programme for Senior Section members. Its a chance to challenge yourself and try new things. Even better, its a framework rather than a specific syllabus, so you can adapt it to fit you.
The programme is divided into eight octants covering the following areas:
- Creativity
- Fit for life
- Community action
- Out of doors
- International
- Independent living
- Personal values
- Leadership

Young Leader Qualification
The Young Leader Qualification is designed to help you take an active, positive part in running your Rainbows, Brownies or Guides unit. Its open to Senior Section members aged 14 to 16.
In4ormers
This is a peer education initiative all about working '4ward, 4 self, 4 others'.
The aim is:
'To enable the development of skills, knowledge and understanding of girls and young women by creating opportunities for them to learn from each other'.
Queen's Guide Award
The Queen's Guide Award is the highest award members can work toward in guiding. It gives you the chance to develop your own skills while contributing to guiding and your local community at an impressive level!
Young Adult Leader Qualification
This qualification supports you to lead Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Senior Section units. You need to be over 16 to start work on the qualification, although you can't hold a warrant until you are 18.
Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme
The internationally-recognised Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme operates in about 100 countries and has three levels: Bronze (for those aged 14 and over), Silver (for those aged 15 and over) and Gold (for those aged 16 and over).
Innovate
Innovate is a national forum for members aged 16-25 years old to discuss and contribute to the direction of Girlguiding UK.
Every eight months about 150 Senior Section members meet up to contribute their ideas in workshops designed to move Girlguiding UK forward.
British Youth Council (BYC)
The British Youth Council (BYC) is the voice of young people in Britain today.
It represents the views of young people to the Government, decision-makers and the media. BYC is an umbrella body and is made up of a large number of youth groups – including uniformed organisations, political parties, youth clubs and the National Union of Students.
The BYC has four aims:
- provide a voice for young people
- promote equality for young people
- help young people be more involved in decisions that affect their lives
- advance young people’s participation in society and civic life.
As the largest uniformed organisation in the UK, Girlguiding UK sends a full delegation to BYC meetings. The delegation is made up of Senior Section members selected from each Country/Region. As a member of the Senior Section you could be part of this! Through BYC your views can be taken forward into the wider community, you can have your voice heard and make a difference.
SSAGO
Girlguiding UK members currently studying at college or university can be part of the Student Scout and Guide Organisation (SSAGO). There are groups at many universities in the UK, or you can be a lone member if there is no group at your place of higher education. Visit the SSAGO website for more information.
