Guides

Welcome to the page that will tell you all about ...

Who are Guides?

Guides are girls aged between 10 and 14 years of age.

They can join Guides by 'flying up' from Brownies or by coming along to any unit.

You do not have to have been a Brownie to join Guides.

What do Guides do?

'What don’t Guides do?' would be easier to answer.

The Guide programme is built around five zones:-

  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Global Awareness
  • Skills & Relationships
  • Celebrating Diversity
  • Discovery

The girls themselves decide what they would like to do - with a little

guidance from the leaders.

The activities undertaken include:-

  • Go For Its
  • Interest badges
  • Outings
  • Camps/holidays
  • Visitors to the unit
  • International events

Topics include Party Planning, Chocolate & Communication as well as some of the more traditional themes such as Camper, First Aid and Cooking.

The programme is constantly being updated and made relevant for today’s girls.

What do Guides wear?

The only item of clothing a guide must wear is her top – this can be a t-shirt, hoody or sweatshirt.

It is recommended to team it with trousers or a skirt for formal events.

Do Guides make a Promise?

Yes they do.  They have to learn their promise and their laws:-

I promise that I will do my best

To love my God

To serve the Queen and my country

To help other people

And to keep the Guide Law

A Guide is honest, reliable and can be trusted.

A Guide is helpful and uses her time and abilities wisely.

A Guide faces challenges and learns from her experience.

A Guide is a good friend and a sister to all Guides.

A Guide is polite and considerate.

A Guide respects all living things and takes care of the world around her.

A Guide would take her Promise when she is ready.  There is no set time for this.  However, if she wishes to attempt the Baden-Powell Challenge she would have to make her promise first.

The Baden-Powell Challenge

Any Guide who has made her Promise, completed as least two Guide Challenge badges and gained two Interest badges, may start the Baden-Powell Challenge.

The Baden-Powell Challenge is the final challenge a girl can undertake as a Guide.  It is a series of 10 challenges based on the five zones listed above and draws on the skills and abilities she has developed during her time as a Guide.

It culminates with the Baden Powell Adventure where the Guide joins girls from other units to participate in an overnight experience.
